About us

The YotM '09 Youth Coordinators at the training centre.

Youth on the Move is a young organization launched in the Netherlands in 2006 and later in Kenya in March 2008.

YotM is an initiative of, by and for the youth with epilepsy that combats the misunderstanding and prejudices about epilepsy. We - youth with epilepsy - come up with ideas, initiate and undertake action. Through our website, we want to inform you about epilepsy and how YOU can treat us and other people with epilepsy with respect.

Every year, YotM trains six youths with epilepsy and six youth without epilepsy to serve as professional youth coordinators who attend Medical Clinics coordinated by Kenya Association for the Welfare of People with Epilepsy (KAWE) on a weekly basis to guide youth with epilepsy to utilize their full potential in life. This is made possible by the GROW model which guides the youth with epilepsy to decide their Goal, look at the Reality, sum up the Options and Wrap up to make their goal a reality.

Vision

An understanding and responsive society that ensures equal participation of persons with epilepsy in all aspects of life.

YotM commits to ensure a just society that is not only sufficiently informed about epilepsy but also supports and demonstrates sufficient commitment to realize proper control and management of the epileptic condition.

Mission

To empower persons with epilepsy and eliminate discrimination through awareness creation in partnership with stakeholders.

YotM recognizes and endeavors to work with all stakeholders ranging from relevant government ministries, departments and agencies to other Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and donor partners in pursuit of the above mission.

Activities

YotM's '08 youth coordinator Daina plays the 'wishing game' at the Nairobi Arboretum during a Mover's Picnic.

YotM has initiated weekly meetings on Saturdays, save for the last Saturday of the Month, where the youth with and without epilepsy meet to organize their activities aimed at creating awareness on epilepsy. The meetings are organized in such a manner that allows time for in -depth discussions on the most burning and emerging contemporary issues amongst the youths. These discussions are known as the “Sikika Meetings”.

Issues range from sex and epilepsy, relationships, enterprenuership, employment, Love, religion among other topica that are of interest to the youth.

Are you interested, want to share your ideas, maybe bring in a 'hot topic'? You are welcome to join in our 'Sikika Meetings' every Saturday except for the last Saturday of the month when we take a break to team build during the monthly Movers Picnic.

You are welcome from 9 am to interract with other youth and check out our library and the meeting officially kicks off from 11 am until 2pm.

The more people join in, the more inspirational it is! The meeting is led by our youth coordinators with epilepsy under the guidance of Annie Arogo, our PR-guide and personal coach.

Sikika! Come and let your ideas, views and opinions be heard!
